More than 8,000 intercropping seedlings support Gia Lai coffee growers

In an update published on 7 August 2023, Vinh Hiep reported the distribution of more than 8,000 seedlings to coffee-growing households in Glar, A Dok, Dak Krong and Dak So Mei communes in Gia Lai. The activity formed part of work linking grower support with awareness of child labour risks in the coffee sector.

Supporting more diverse coffee farms

The seedlings included locally known species such as gao, dau, huong, doi and trac. They were supplied for intercropping within participating farms, giving growers another practical component to consider in the management of their land.

Intercropping requires decisions about the species, spacing and care appropriate to each farm. The distribution activity provided planting material; subsequent results depend on establishment and ongoing management by the participating households.

Linking livelihoods with child protection awareness

The programme connected farm support with communication about reducing child labour risks. These subjects are linked through household livelihoods, access to information and the conditions in which children grow up in coffee-producing communities.
