Thai Nhu Hiep discusses a clearer international identity for Vietnamese Robusta

On 15 November 2025, Thai Nhu Hiep shared views on the development of Vietnamese Robusta and the need for a clearer identity in international markets. Speaking from his experience at Vinh Hiep and the Vietnam Coffee–Cocoa Association, VICOFA, he highlighted standards, traceability and value for growers.

From production volume to a recognised product identity

Vietnamese Robusta has a strong presence in international trade. The discussion focused on how the sector can make its quality more understandable through shared language, consistent assessment and a clearer connection between the product and its origin.

The proposals included greater coordination on quality standards and the way Vietnamese coffee is presented to international buyers. A common framework can help producers and customers discuss what a product offers using information that can be examined, rather than relying only on a broad quality label.

Training and cooperation

The discussion referred to the Specialty Coffee Association, SCA, and Trans Pacific Partners, TPP, in the context of knowledge and cooperation. Here, TPP refers to the organisation named in the discussion. The proposals concerned training and engagement; they should not be read as an announcement of a completed agreement.

Keeping growers within the value discussion

Traceability and standards also connect the market with the people producing the coffee. Improving how origin and quality are documented can support a more useful dialogue about the work at farm level and how value is shared along the chain.

Vinh Hiep’s contribution to the discussion placed long-term farmer relationships alongside processing, product development and international promotion. The direction presented was to strengthen the identity of Vietnamese Robusta through coordinated work across the sector.
